Hans Spemann[hAns shpA´mAn] Pronunciation Key, 18691941, German embryologist. He was professor of zoology (191935) at the Univ. of Freiburg. By transplanting embryonic tissue to a new location or to another embryo, he investigated the agency that governs the growth and differentiation of cells. He received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and described his research in Embryonic Development and Induction (1938).
